Weekly Video 7.1.08
June 30, 2008 | 1 Comment
I’d like to start a new series of posts today, called Weekly Video. My son loves to watch videos on the computer and there are tons to choose from on YouTube and other internet video outlets- free entertainment! I sometimes open up a little window for him in the corner and play one while I check e-mail, etc… it keeps him happily entertained while I take care of whatever I’m trying to accomplish. Some of his favorites are from 1970’s Sesame Street, and this one cracks us both up- enjoy!

Tower of Books Indoor Preschool Game
February 1, 2008 | Leave a Comment
February is generally a snowy, icy, wet, yucky time of year wherever you live, which means a lot of your time is spent indoors. Being cooped up inside can be difficult, especially with busy little kids so here’s an indoor game from PreschoolRock.com to play with your preschoolers.
How to Play
1. Build a tower of books. Put a couple of big books on the bottom for stability. Large, hardcover picture books work well. Throw a smaller one in the middle of the tower to provide a challenge.
2. Have your preschooler pull a book out of the center of the tower – but don’t let the tower fall! This is a great game to teach preschoolers all about gravity and balance.
Show your preschooler how to press lightly on the center of the top book to keep the tower stable. Then nudge the center book out just a wee bit at a time. As long as they’re moving slowly, preschoolers will be able to feel when the tower of books becomes unstable.
They’ll also begin to learn how to shift the hand pressing on the top book to keep it from toppling over. If the tower topples, just build it back up and play again.
3. If your preschooler is able to remove the center book without toppling the tower, keep going! Repeat step 2 until your preschooler has removed all of the books from the tower.
4. Stack the removed books as you go so you’ll have a new tower of books when you’re done.
5. Play again and again!

Learn about Music
October 26, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Some of my earliest and best memories as a little kid are going to the symphony in downtown Pittsburgh. I think this is a big part of why I like music so much, especially classical music. It’s never to early to start learning about music and the instruments that make it. So here are some fun links to get you started.
Learn about Instruments - an easy guide to learning about all the different instruments; strings, woodwinds, percussion, and more!
SFS Kids - the San Fransisco Symphony kids site, absolutely full of fun information. Learn more about the different instruments and where the belong in the orchestra. Be sure to check out the music lab, where you can experiment with tempo, rhythm, pitch, and harmony, and even make your own tunes!
DSO Kids - the Dallas Symphony kids site, another great source for music fun. It has tips for practicing your music, an instrument encyclopedia where you can even listen to the different instruments, and lots of musical games.

Online Tetris Map Game
September 16, 2007 | 1 Comment

Ready for some geography practice? Statetris is an interesting game mixing aspects of the popular game ‘Tetris’ and geography. Instead of positioning the typical Tetris blocks, you position states/countries at their proper location. Fun, challenging and educational! You can play the US version, UK, Africa, France, Europe, and even try to position all the counties in South Carolina! There are 3 levels, easy, medium and hard, so the game is good for a wide age range. Give it a try!

Fun ways to reuse plastic bottles
July 19, 2007 | Leave a Comment
If your family regularly buys plastic bottles of pop or juice, the recent post at MyEducationJunction, 10 Things You Can Do With Empty Plastic is one you’ll want to check out. I love the bowling play set, and cutting off the bottom of the bottle for use as a paint cup is an excellent idea!
Another fun way to use the bottles is in playing the “Bottle Ball Game” (rules found at FamilyFun.go.com):
HOW TO PLAY:
1. Set up the bottles (one per dodger) randomly but at least 15 feet apart. Draw a 4-foot chalk circle around each one.
2. While one child (the kicker) boots an inflated ball at the plastic bottle targets, the other players (the dodgers) put their best feet forward defending these targets. Dodgers must keep one foot inside their circle while using their other foot to deflect the ball. The kicker stands at least 6 feet from the closest player and can aim at any bottle.
3. Once the kicker succeeds in knocking a bottle over, he gets to change places with whomever was guarding that circle.

Games and activities to do with your toddler
July 17, 2007 | 1 Comment
Even if you have oodles of toys, it can be difficult to come up with new and creative ideas to keep toddlers busy. I ran across a site that has a list of 70 games and activities to do with your child. It’s a great list, including ideas like playing “shadow tag”, wash the car together, and making a puzzle out of a cereal box. I’ll add one that I think I may have posted here before, but it worked so well, I’ll mention it again. Get out the collander and some uncooked spaghetti (works best if it’s broken in half) and show them how to put the pieces through the holes in the collander to watch it disappear. This kept my son engaged for half and hour, easily!
