Young children will develop financial skills by watching and learning from their parents. As kids grow into adulthood they tend to acquire the same spending and savings habits that their parents have shown them through the years.

There are a number of activities you can do with your child to ensure they’re on the path to financial security later in life.

Helping with the family budget

Some parents might not like the idea of divulging their personal finances to their kids but this is a great way to show your children real world budgeting. It might not be the best idea if your children are very young, as your current money situation could become the talk of the playground. Once your child is mature enough to know when to keep this information private you should show them how to budget using real figures. Let your children pay some of the household bills and go over the concepts of assets and liabilities.

Saving for something big

Kids will often have a big item, like a video game system or bike that they really want to purchase. Having your child calculate out all the costs involved in purchasing this item can be a great way to teach them about budgeting. If they get an allowance or have a part time job then they can calculate out the exact amount of time it will take them to purchase this big item with the money they are currently making. This will teach your child the importance of saving and help them understand the value of money. You can also set up a savings account for them at the local bank so that the scenario will mimic the way that adults save for big items.

Take Your Kids to Work Day

Teaching kids that money doesn’t just appear magically from an ATM machine is very important. One way to show them that ‘work = money’ is to give them an allowance or set them up with a part time lawn mowing job at your neighbor’s house. Many schools also have a Take Your Kids to Work Day program that allows your child to see your workplace for a day. If their school doesn’t have this program then maybe you should bring them along for a day anyway. Instead of just giving your child a tour of the building you should let them watch you do real work for an hour or two so that they can better understand what it takes to put food on the table. One large part of budgeting is income so your child needs to under where that money comes from.

Grocery Shopping

Going to the grocery store can be a great way to teach your kids the benefit of a budget. Tell your child that you only want to spend a specific amount at the store and then get them to go through the pantry and refrigerator to figure out the food needed for the next week. Offer your child suggestions but let them make most of the list. After the list is complete get them to put an approximate cost beside each item using grocery store flyers that came in the mail. When you go to the grocery store bring a calculator and help your child keep within your set spending limits.

Allowance

Most children will take their entire allowance and spend it in the first day or two. These habits can continue into adulthood and as an adult they could end up spending their entire paycheck one or two days after receiving it. Instead of immediate spending you should use an allowance to teach your child about budgeting. Set up a savings account for your child at your bank and show them how to break down the money they earn each month into savings, daily expenses, and fun stuff. Don’t take all the fun stuff out of the equation but make sure they understand that money isn’t just to be frittered away the second it arrives.

Money matters. As our kids enter their teens, they will also be entering the work force and need to have all of the tools necessary to survive the green jungle. Here are the top five ways to teach teens about money and what to do with it.

1. Knowledge Is Power

There’s no better way to start your teen off on the right foot than to educate them about money early on. Kids are sponges and teens are no exception. So it’s important you teach your teenager the value of a dollar and how taxes, investments, and savings work. How to budget, and how to stick to it are also important things to teach. You’ve been through all this remember, they haven’t. Share your hard won experience with them. They’ll soak it up and will have a better grasp on things when they enter the work force.

2. Bank Account

Setting a teen up with a bank account is only the beginning. They also need to understand how important it is to keep money in it. Have them put a portion of their allowance or pay check in their account. Show them how to save for a necessary big ticket item and for college. They’ll also learn how the banking world works but they’ll need careful tutoring when it comes to credit.

3. Part Time Job

There’s no substitute for experience and encouraging your teen to join the work force is the only way for him or her to get that experience. They’ll gather firsthand knowledge of how to find and keep a job, pay taxes, and save while learning the responsibilities that go with the job. They are going to spend the next several decades working at one job or another. The sooner they learn this, the better off they will be.

4. Pay Their Way

If the teen is working while living at home, then you might have them help with the household expenses. Whether you need the contributions or not, have them chip in. They’ll learn how much it costs to keep a roof over their head and you can’t put a price on that. Also, if you don’t need their money, you can set up a bank account for them and dump the money in there to give them as a nest egg when they move out.

5. Let Them Pay The Piper

This is the toughest item on the list but, ultimately, can be the most rewarding. Even if your teen has taken everything you’ve told them about handling money to heart, they might still wind up in over their head at some point. The key here is to let them get themselves out of it. Don’t bail them out. Offer advice, encouragement and so on but let them learn the consequences of irresponsible spending. If you whip out your checkbook at the first sign of trouble, your teen will be convinced this safety net will always be there to catch them when they fall and they won’t learn to stand on their own financial feet.

Spelling practice doesn’t have to be boring, thanks to some great resources on the internet. One of the best of these resources is Spelling City. The site allows you to enter your own spelling lists and then it creates spelling practice games and tests based on those lists.

During the summer months, kids have the unique opportunity to save up a little bit of cash, while learning the value of work. For kids who want to make some money, there are a few different options. You might have to get creative, but it can be done and the efforts can be highly rewarding. Here are four of the top ways.

1. Flipping produce
Some people flip homes for a living, but kids can flip produce. If you live in an area with a solid farmers market, then go there and purchase some popular items for cheap. You can then take those items and sell them alongside the road. This is an excellent way to turn a little bit of money into a lot of money, and you will learn the value of capital and turnover.

2. Mowing lawns
One of the time trusted methods of making money for kids is to put out some yard work offers. Go around door to door and offer to cut lawns each week. If you are into enterprising, you can print up some flyers and advertise your service that way. Charge $25 or $30 per lawn and you can make a nice amount of money while also getting a good tan. Most kids will have parents who can help with the equipment, making this much easier.

3. Umpiring little league baseball games
Many little leagues run through the early summer months and for older kids, you could be an umpire. If you know the game of baseball and you are up to the challenge, you could earn $40 or $50 per game just for making the calls. This would obviously only be an option for kids that were on the older end of the age scale, but it’s one that is both fun and easy.

4. Hit the job force
It won’t be an option for every kid out there, but many opportunities exist to get a “real” job. The issue is that most kids don’t have the ability or the organizational skills to maintain their own business. That means that working for someone else might be a good idea. Some kids get jobs as summer camp counselors if they are old enough, or summer camp helpers if they are a bit younger. Working for a local small time summer baseball team could work, as they are always looking for people to man the ticket counter or the food cart.

Virtual Stock Exchange

Create public or private games with a cash balance you set

Choose from thousands of available games

Test your strategy with a personal portfolio

Leverage powerful news and research resources from MarketWatch

How the Market Works

Their virtual stock exchange allows you to practice buying and selling real stocks using imaginary money for the purpose of gaining experience with stock trading. This is also known as paper trading or fantasy trading.

Recommended book for further investing instruction:

The really cool and different thing is how they are going about it. They have created a safe online experience that offers educational digital content to kids and their families for free. The site’s online puzzle-adventure games, animated web stories and “behind-the-scenes” videos have been designed by experts to help parents teach their kids about altruism and to inspire them to know they can make a difference in the lives of other people. The secret is that it does all this on “kid terms” – in a fun, cool and relatable way. Additionally, the content aims to get kids enthusiastic about the world of medicine and science.
