We take a picnic lunch and stay out all day. They really like going out in the boat, as well as fishing from the dock. The excitement on their face is priceless when they landed one, even if it's a small one. Then when they get tired of fishing they can play in the water. We take them home tired, ready for supper and bathes. No fussing about going to bed either. We keep the kids busy by taking them fishing. We take a picnic lunch and stay out all day. I like this because we are able to turn the AC off in the house and conserve energy. Just make sure to pack on the sun block. Free library activities and reading clubs are a great way to keep the kids cool and active during summer months. I like to encourage them to continue reading even while school is out. Thanks! And if they spray each other, it helps to cool off on the hot days but doesn't soak them like a hose would. I'm a big crafter so in the summer I like to do crafty things outside.....find all sorts of treasures and make a collage, do leaf rubbings, bubble paintings, give the camera to my DD who is 5 to get her perspective on things in our yard, neighborhood and the like. My kids only knew Florida, beaches, pools heat, etc. It is so nice to discover a whole new region. We plan on exploring all summer, as much as we can with the little money we have and spend as much time together before my Husband deploys for Iraq in October. My kids are young 3 and 5. I take my kids to the library to do "kid research" such as look for books about our new state and the environment and animals who live here. Then we try to go on day trips and picnics to see first hand what we learned about. I also try to incorporate arts and crafts and cooking experiences that all tie together to our topics. Its a lot of fun to make "ordinary" things so much fun.
