Learn about Music
October 26, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Some of my earliest and best memories as a little kid are going to the symphony in downtown Pittsburgh. I think this is a big part of why I like music so much, especially classical music. It’s never to early to start learning about music and the instruments that make it. So here are some fun links to get you started.
Learn about Instruments - an easy guide to learning about all the different instruments; strings, woodwinds, percussion, and more!
SFS Kids - the San Fransisco Symphony kids site, absolutely full of fun information. Learn more about the different instruments and where the belong in the orchestra. Be sure to check out the music lab, where you can experiment with tempo, rhythm, pitch, and harmony, and even make your own tunes!
DSO Kids - the Dallas Symphony kids site, another great source for music fun. It has tips for practicing your music, an instrument encyclopedia where you can even listen to the different instruments, and lots of musical games.

These leaf coloring pages would be a great activity to do in the car on a trip to see the fall foliage. They even have the names of the different leaves so older kids can learn which leaves belong to the different trees.
And for kids who love to learn, here is a simple explanation of why autum leaves change color.

Free Toys to Print and Build

I have never enjoyed crafts very much, but as soon as I saw these box toys I had to immediately print one out. Paperboxworld has a bunch of free toys to download and build. It makes me want to print them all out and make up stories to go along with them. They have cars, boats, animals, and more. My favorite is the taxi, ready to take you anywhere in paperboxworld.

Decorate a Pumpkin in Three Easy Steps
October 15, 2007 | Leave a Comment
If you have very young children, or if you just don’t like the mess of pumpkin carving, why not try painting pumpkins? This is great idea, because not only is it safer and less messy, it is much easier!
Materials needed:
- Pumpkin
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Newspaper
Step one: Lay the newspaper on your work surface.
Step two: Set out the pumpkin and paint.
Steph three: Paint fun or scary faces on the pumpkin!
You can even use the pumpkin carving patterns from the previous post, painting inside the spaces instead of carving the pumpkin. An added benefit of this method of decorating pumpkins is that because you don’t cut into the pumpkin it won’t rot as quickly as a normal jack o’lantern, and you will be able to enjoy your work more! If you apply a paint sealer before and after you paint your pumpkin, it lasts even longer.

Apple Ornament Craft
October 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I went apple picking a few days ago and was reminded that October is National Apple month. So here is a festive craft to get you ready for fall! It’s an easy apple ornament that you can hang in the kitchen, or save to hang on your Christmas tree.
Materials Needed:
- Applesauce
- Cinnamon
- Cookie Cutters
- Straw
- Ribbon
Mix pretty much equal parts of the applesauce and the cinnamon until you get it to be a nice clay consistency. Roll the dough out on wax paper with a rolling pin until it is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Use the cookie cutters to cut out holiday shapes. With the straw, poke a small hole towards the top of the shape. Put the shapes in a dry spot to dry. Be patient, this takes a few days. Once your sweet-smelling ornaments are dry you can string a piece of ribbon through the hole you made with and hang it up.

Recipes for Fun Halloween Treats
October 4, 2007 | 2 Comments
Halloween is only weeks away, and to get you in the mood, here are some easy recipes for some great Halloween treats.
Hairy Daddy Longlegs Cupcakes - This creepy crawler of a cupcake would be fun and tasty for kids of all age.
Monster Toes - These ‘toes’ are filling and fun at the same time!
Black Halloween Punch - A ghostly frozen hand floating in creepy black punch.
Eyeball Ice Cubes - My personal favorite. What could be more fun than scaring your siblings with an eyeball floating in their drink!
Trim the stem and root ends of a radish (make sure it’s small enough to fit the individual section of an ice-cube tray), and use a paring knife to scrape off most of the red skin. Leave just enough red to give the radish a veined appearance. Rinse the radish off, and use a small melon baller to cut 1/2-inch-diameter hole into the radish. Fit an olive, cut side out, into the hole, and place the radish in the ice-cube tray. Repeat this process until the tray is full, then pour water over the eyeballs, and freeze.
